Certified!

We did it!!!!!!!!
We are the FIRST (and the only!) veterinary practice in the greater St. Louis area to earn Silver Certification in Low-Stress Handling!
Every one of us took the class, passed the many tests, and participated in a workshop to perfect our techniques.
We learned how to read body language and interpret subtle signs of fear. We also learned various ways to approach and handle dogs and cats to signal we are not here to hurt them.
None of the techniques are rocket science (although several are quite clever!). And we still prescribe medication prior to visits for our very nervous nellies… they are appreciative!
But vet visits are more enjoyable, for our patients and for ourselves!
It feels pretty good to be the ONLY veterinary practice in the area to offer this!

Low Stress Handling

We are in the process of earning our certification in Low-Stress Handling.
It’s not just a piece of paper – we are truly changing the way we work with dogs and cats!
Yesterday we closed the practice for a couple hours to hold a workshop to practice the different towel wraps for cats.
There are SIX different ways to wrap a cat in a towel to make him feel safe, yet keep him somewhat restrained. Why six? You pick the wrap that best fits the cat’s personality and preference! We had some cats who wanted to have their head covered and feel hidden. Others hate having their head covered and want to know what’s going on!
We started with practicing on stuffed animals (wrapping a cat properly is harder than it looks). Then we graduated to wrap Kelly’s and Miranda’s cats – they were very good sports!
Here’s some photos of the action…
